Our Leading IB Diploma Programme Curriculum

One of the greatest strengths of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is its distinctive, broad, whole-child approach. Each pupil is required to study six elective IB courses, three at a Higher Level (HL) and three at a Standard Level (SL). These are chosen from six subject groups and completed in addition to the three compulsory core components, Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Unlike academic courses, the core components focus on transferable skills like time management, independent research, and mental agility. Students at our school benefit from the largest variety of elective subjects available at an IB World School in Alicante, allowing learners to tailor their choices to their ambitions.

Elective and compulsory IBDP courses are designed to complement each other, creating a varied and thorough academic foundation that builds on the rigorous British base offered at our school. Rather than reciting facts, IB graduates learn to draw connections across knowledge areas, assess information, and find creative, responsible solutions to problems, setting them up for success in some of the most challenging career paths.

IBDP Subjects

Students of the IBDP study six optional subjects in addition to the three core components that differentiate the IB certificate from any other qualification. Candidates must select one IB course from groups one to five, which cover language, social sciences, mathematics, and science. The final subject can be chosen from any of the six groups, allowing for additional depth in an area of interest or the pursuit of creative courses offered in group six. This approach allows students to create a holistic network of information that can fully support any future endeavour.

From business to engineering, medicine, and the arts, our IB alumni have reached remarkable heights in university and beyond, securing our position as the top IB School in Alicante.

What are the IB Core Components?

Perhaps the most important differentiator of an IB education is the Core Components, three skills-based subjects designed specifically to prepare learners for the realities of higher education.
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) encourages students to reflect on the very nature of knowledge, teaching them to question assumptions and critically assess information presented to them.

The Extended Essay (EE) simulates the research papers expected in postgraduate diplomas, bolstering independent research and encouraging students to seek new perspectives on ideas in areas of interest.
Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) fosters active involvement in community, creative, and environmental projects, facilitating holistic development and social awareness.

IGCSE Teachers

Subject Specialist IB Teachers

The success of our IB Diploma Programme in Alicante can be attributed to our team of subject specialist teachers, overseen by our dedicated IB coordinator. Their expertise, consistency, and clear understanding of how students progress across two years of rigorous assessment help create a supportive and demanding environment where students regularly achieve results above 40.

Our approach prioritises personalised attention, which is particularly important in an IB education where students are managing multiple long-term assignments alongside exam preparation. Teachers provide structured, immediate feedback against IB criteria, help students plan internal assessments realistically, and support students in improving academic writing, analysis, and problem-solving techniques.

What is the Bilingual IB Diploma?

The IB Bilingual Diploma is an additional accolade awarded to students who demonstrate a high level of skill in two or more languages. In addition to indicating the academic rigor expected of an IBDP course, the Bilingual Diploma also demonstrates advanced linguistic skills and cultural competence, enhancing university and career prospects in multinational or international contexts.
Our language policies and broad subject offering actively prepare students to achieve this additional certificate, resulting in over 50% of our candidates earning this sought-after award, significantly higher than the global average of 25%.

To qualify, pupils demonstrate academic proficiency in two languages in one of two ways:
1. Score 3 or higher in two Language A subjects.
2. Score 3 or higher in one Language A subject and one Group 3 or 4 subject taught in a different language.

Facilities at our Cambridge School

Facilities at our IB School in Alicante

As the first British Google Reference School in Spain, our IB World School in Alicante is specifically set up to support the specialist demands of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Digital resources are embedded into everyday study, helping students manage demanding workflows and track progress in a way that reflects how they will work at university while improving important digital skills.

In addition to online resources, physical facilities promote academic achievement and exploration. Five well-equipped science laboratories offer a space for advanced work in Chemistry and Physics. Our high-end library is stocked with literature that supports both academic research and creative writing. The theatre and outstanding art room facilitate creative expression, while the outdoor sports grounds encourage physical fitness. Together, these spaces complement the goals of an IB education, fostering exceptional academic and personal outcomes.

Learn More About the IB

The IB is assessed according to global standards, ensuring consistency across the world. Each of the six elective subjects is worth a maximum of seven points, while core components contribute up to three additional points, accumulating in a maximum score of 45.
CAS is not formally assessed; however, students must demonstrate certain personal outcomes to pass the diploma.

Yes, the IB Diploma is acknowledged by universities globally, including in Spain. Unlike A levels, which require additional validation, our IB Diploma Programme in Alicante offers students easy, direct access to both public and private institutions. In fact, many accept an IB certificate as an alternative to PCE exams, although students are permitted to write entrance exams, with admissions teams selecting the better of the two results.

To convert IB results to Parte Grande, the scores of each of the six academic subjects are added together, plus an additional eighteen points (three for each subject). This total is then divided by six to determine the average out of ten.

The IB learner profile is a guideline that shapes the culture of the IB Diploma Programme by setting clear expectations for how students learn and contribute. Our IB School in Alicante follows these principles, encouraging students to become knowledgeable, inquiring, and reflective thinkers and risk-takers, who are balanced, principled, open-minded, and caring in their approach. These qualities are developed through academic work that requires students to argue from evidence, collaborate effectively, and take responsibility for meeting deadlines.

Perhaps the biggest difference between our Sixth Form offerings is that the IB Diploma Programme offers a broad education, while A Levels provide a far more specialised, in-depth approach. This makes our IBDP in Alicante ideal for all-rounders who wish to pursue a pre-university certificate that supports academic growth alongside the development of transferable skills like time management and independent research.
On the other hand, A Levels are ideal for pupils with clear study ambitions wishing to specialise in a specific subject area, gaining greater depth of knowledge.

Both courses completed through our school allow direct access to Spanish and international universities, with the IB qualification holding slightly more prestige due to its superior university preparation abilities and global assessment standards.
